Short notes of Martijn G.

Day 1

After a nice but hard day of sailing. Normal winds during the first race, stronger wind during the second race. Hard wind for the sailors that started the last race. Despite of the hard conditions 15 boats finished within the time limit. Today Hylke and Jori are the leaders of the pack.

The first day of the European Championship started partly cloudy with medium winds around 14 to 19 knots. At 10:00 the first competitors went on the water for the first race that started at 11:00. Everyone was excited to start racing and finally sail the European Championship after two days of measuring. As the wind increased during the following hours the races became more difficult for the competitors and some had to retire after the first or second race. For the other teams the first 3 races were sailed with some surprising results for some teams and other teams who are not yet in the overall ranking on the place where they had hoped to be.

The first races was won by Elske Vermeij & Oigen Blankert, which they didn’t expected up front. The second and third race were won by Hylke Sasse & Jori Vermeij.

It was a very exciting day and fortunately without any serious accidents and everyone was able to get to shore safely also when conditions got to extreme measures for some of the teams and experience.

Day 2

The second day of the event started with light wind which offered new chances for all sailors. The results from the previous day were a little bit hustled since some teams weren’t able to sail 3 races on Wednesday and could not manage the strong winds that well. The field got therefore tested with different conditions providing chances for lighter crews who are back in the game again now. However, during the day the wind shifted and increased mixing the field throughout the races. This resulted at the finish that some sailors were very pleased with their results and others were probably a bit disappointed.

Again, 3 races were sailed but this time everyone was able to sail 3 races. The races were won twice by Rolf de Jong and his son Hugo de Jong. The last race was won again by Hylke Sasse and Jori Vermeij who lead the overall ranking at this time with a small advantage on Rolf & Hugo de Jong and Thorsten Willemsen & Stephani Tauchert.

Tomorrow the weather forecast says strong winds with around 17 knots, it will be an interesting and exhausting day for all sailors. Let’s hope for fair sailing conditions and races and we will report tomorrow to you again.

JPN1640: Ryo Takiguchi, Atsushi Yoshinaga
